In-store farming: salad and herbs grown inside the supermarket

In-store farming means growing fresh greens in a closed vertical farm inside the store, a few metres from the shelf. Swegreen builds, owns and runs the farm; the store harvests daily, sells the produce and keeps the revenue – with no investment.

How it works

How does a supermarket farm work?

The farm is delivered as a service. Read how Farming as a Service works.

01

Site analysis

We assess space, customer flow and volume: an entrance tower, the produce section or a free-standing module.

02

Installation

The store prepares power and water. We do the rest, including staff training.

03

Remote operation

Light, nutrients, temperature and humidity are controlled digitally and monitored around the clock.

04

Harvest and sale

Staff harvest on the day of sale. The store keeps the full sales revenue.

Two in-store farm systems

How much space does an in-store farm need?

Because the farm grows upwards, a few square metres are enough to start.

Questions from retailers

In-store farming, answered

What does in-store farming cost the store?

No investment. On an agreement of three years or more, Swegreen covers construction, technical installation and the farm itself. The store pays a monthly fee and keeps all sales revenue, with prices secured for the full length of the contract.

How much energy does an in-store farm use?

Our farm at Maxi ICA Solna used 203,337 kWh in 2025 for 151,092 plants – 1.35 kWh per plant. Surplus heat from the farm warms the store. See the measured energy use.

Who runs the farm day to day?

We build, operate and monitor the farm remotely. Store staff harvest and sell – about eight hours a week, within normal working hours.

Which crops can be grown?

Salad, herbs, leafy greens and microgreens – such as basil, oak leaf lettuce, crisp lettuce, coriander and dill.

Is in-store farming pesticide-free?

Yes. The crops grow without soil in a closed, controlled environment, so no pesticides are needed from seed to shelf.
